SSC Associate Rick Kern came up to NYC last week for a brief vacation / shopping trip with his family. (His daughter Jessica should start a fashion / shopping blog.) Here are his top picks from his recent trip, but I'll save a separate entry for Crif Dogs.
"We had outstanding pastries/goodies and yummy coffee over the weekend (twice) at La Bergamote at 20th and Ninth Ave. Closest thing we have found to what we experienced in Paris.
"Perhaps the best meal we have had in quite some time was had at Piccolo Angolo (Hudson and Jane Streets in the Village). Ended up staying there very late and chumming up with the owner who was having his late night dinner next to us. We were there to about midnight. I would highly recommend you check it out. We sampled a lot of the menu and nothing feel short of outstanding.
"Ate at Joe's Pizza on Bleecker in the Village. Very highly rated pizza in Zagat. Got an onion pie and sat on three of the few stools in the joint and looked out on the street action. It was great fun and the pizza was superb. But...you can tell Nick it was not at all up to Pepe's standards in New Haven.
"Great sushi at Yama on Carmine Street - also in the Village (I guess a pattern is emerging here). Got sandwiches for the train ride to lovely Metuchen at Whole Foods grocery store in Chelsea. What a wonderful grocery store!
"Keep sampling Tina. We will reap the rewards of your fastidious research."
I have to second the "great sushi at Yama" opinion, although I only ever ate at the one in the Village (I think the original location?). So good, so tasty, so fresh!
